In class, we just discussed the differences between the mean,...

In class, we just discussed the differences between the mean, median, and mode. Moving forward in your careers, it will be important to understand when to report the proper values and under what condition each statistic will provide you with the most information. To better understand when you will report different statistics and why, please read through the following scenarios. For each situation, you will indicate whether the individual reported the correct statistic (or not). If they did, please provide a brief explanation regrading why this is correct. If they did not report the right statistic, then please explain what they did wrong. In addition, please indicate which statistic should have been reported and explain why.

Melanie is working for the McDonalds marketing team. In recent years, McDonalds has taken the approach of adding and removing certain items from the menu. For example, McDonalds only sells their McRib and Shamrock Shakes at certain times of the year. To assess customer satisfaction with this marketing approach, the company recently launched a national survey of individuals who had eaten at a McDonalds in the past year. Within their survey, one questions asked specifically about whether people held very negative (1) or very positive (5) views regarding their limited release strategy. When looking at the descriptive statistics, Melanie found a great deal of polarization regarding this approach. Indeed, a large number of people didn't like the approach (lots of people answering 2 [negative) and 4 [positive]). In the end, Melanie decided to report the mean for this particular question in the report she was creating for the marketing team (i.e., a mean of 3.2). Please indicate if Vinnie reported the correct statistics. If yes, please indicate why. If not, please indicate what was done wrong and what should be reported instead.

The University of Florida foundation team wanted to report on the successes tied to the latest "Gator Day of Giving." When making decisions, the team wanted to report important numbers from the latest day of giving. One point of emphasis was noting some of the large donations that came in from this last round of fundraising (i.e., 3 donations of ~10 million dollars, 4 donations ~20 million dollars, and 1 donation of ~40 million dollars). Members of the team also wanted to report a number that reflected the giving of an average person on this past day of giving. In the end, they decided to report the average (mean) donation the received that day, which ended up being ~$15,000. Please indicate if the team reported the correct statistics. If yes, please indicate why. If not, please indicate what was done wrong and what should be reported instead.

Disney World recently conducted a survey of individuals who had Florida Resident Annual Passes for the parks. Disney had decided to conduct this survey because they were planning to assess how these individuals would feel about a new policy tied to annual reviews the company was thinking of implementing. Specifically, they were interested in whether passholders would be strongly oppose (1) or strongly support (5) a new policy that would allow pass holders to bring two guests into the parks with them 7 times a year. In essence, a pass holder could bring family or friends with them into one the parks 7 times during the course of the year they had their pass. When looking at the results, the research team determined that there was some polarization on this issue, with a large number of people opposing the policy and a nearly equal number of people supporting this new policy. In the end, the research team decided to report the number of people choosing oppose (2) and support (4). Please indicate if the team reported the correct statistics. If yes, please indicate why. If not, please indicate what was done wrong and what should be reported instead.
