Case of Iman
Iman has engaged your service for counselling. Iman has been experiencing a number of issues and is not sure what has been happening over the past few months that seems to have contributed to the situation.
Personal Background
Iman is a (you specify gender) coming from a family of four. Iman is 22 years old, physically healthy, and single. Iman is the oldest child with a younger sister, and two younger brothers. Iman's father is hard working and was somewhat distant in Iman's childhood however Iman believes their father provided a good home and the necessities of life. Iman's mother also worked hard in a high-pressure office environment and often came home expressing her anxiety over the decisions made and the people she worked with.
Current Situation
Iman currently attends University, is in the third year of a science program and is struggling with grades and assignments. This is the first time grades or academic responsibility has been an issue. Iman begins to tell you about the personal emotional issues over the past year as Iman has experienced many different events. Iman has become involved with friends that seem to enjoy partying and social gatherings during a time of crisis such as a pandemic or major outbreak (ie. COVID 19, HIV/AIDS, SARS). Iman has struggled to find a place to fit in with friends with concerns of social distancing but also not wanting to experience rejection. Iman has been introduced to alcohol and drugs at a number of the parties and has been more involved in consumption of alcohol and drugs (mainly marijuana) more that what Iman has been comfortable doing. Iman has significant mood swings of feeling elated and everything is great for a few days to not wanting to go out and avoiding people. Iman has also realized that (her/his) mother has become quite forgetful of events and trying to put sentences together. Iman's father believes (her/his) mother is just under pressure and nothing is wrong. The last time Iman was at home, (her/his) mother was not remembering where she had placed certain items she was just using, and at one point looked at Iman and asked "who are you?" Iman is very concerned and wants the family to have an assessment completed. However, Iman's siblings are not in favour at this time. Iman explains (he/she) are experiencing a great deal of anxiety as the pressure of assignments begins to build, exams are coming, and growing worries about family. Iman also explain as a young child Iman experienced rejection as those in school often made fun of Iman and teased Iman. Iman shares of feeling quite low in mood and is concerned about moving forward.
