I. How to Measure Blood Pressure in the Clinic
Directions: Watch the video by PolyFit demonstrating the technique for measuring blood pressure
on a patient and answer the questions below. Use complete sentences. Incomplete sentences will
lose points. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=Gmic13mvsgo&feature=emb_logo
1. What equipment do you need to take someone's blood pressure?
2. Where is the blood pressure cuff placed on the patient?
3. Where is the end of the stethoscope placed on the patient?
4. What should you do to the stethoscope if you can't hear anything?
5. What happens when you squeeze the bulb on the Blood pressure cuff?
6. As you slowly deflate the cuff, what should you be looking for?
7. When recoding blood pressure which one comes first, the systolic pressure or diastolic pressure?
II. The Theory Behind Determining Blood Pressure Using a Blood Pressure Cuff
Directions: Watch the video by Dr. Vega explaining how a blood pressure cuff works and then
answer the questions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=bLu2wf4a38Q&feature=emb_logo
8. Summarize how a blood pressure cuff allows a person to determine blood pressure.
9. What is considered a normal blood pressure? (Research)
III. Hearing the Sounds of Korotkoff in the Stethoscope
Directions: Watch the video below revealing what a person hears in the stethoscope when taking a
patient's blood pressure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTJvWLi2uCM&feature=emb_logo
10. What is the patient's systolic pressure?
11. What is the patient's diastolic pressure?
12. Is this patient's blood pressure considered normal?
IV. Does the Student Need More Training?
Scenario: You are the lead trainer of a group Certified Nursing Assistant students. Today students
are demonstrating their ability to listen and accurately measure patient blood pressure. You are
grading the students on their accuracy and decide if the students pass or need more training. In your
exam, students can be within +/- 2 mm of Hg to have an accurate measurement.
Directions: Below is a table from with blood pressure measurements from one Certified Nursing
Assistant student. Check the student's measurements by visiting the links to determine if the
student's answers are correct or incorrect. If the student is correct write "correct" and if the student is
incorrect write "incorrect" and the correct blood pressure in the answer space. After completing the
table answer the questions.
Tip: Turn the volume up to discern between background noise and the Sounds of Korotkoff. The
Sounds of Korotkoff are a regular, rhythmic thumping. A single thump followed by a long pause of
silence is background noise.

* If incorrect, write the correct blood pressure in the box.
13. How many measurements did the student get correct?
14. Did the student pass or fail your exam ? (assume 75% accuracy or greater is a pass). To
calculate pass rate: (X correct / 8 total) * 100%
15. Assuming patient 1 has a blood pressure of 100/70 mm of Hg, what is the patient's pulse
pressure?
16. Assuming patient 1 has a blood pressure of 100/70 mm of Hg, what is the patient's mean arterial
pressure?
17. Which patients have hypertension or pre-
hypertension? Refer to the chart on the right for
guidance.
18. Which patients have hypotension? Refer to the chart
