Karen, recently graduated from medical school. She sent a letter to Julia, her university
classmate on Wednesday 4 January 2023 and told her she is moving to take a new job in
another country. She asked Julia whether she is interested in buying "the stuff" at her flat. The
letter listed all the items to be sold, the condition of each item and the price for each item.
There are 38 items in total (including the TV and sofa) for the price of $40,000.
Julia received the letter on Thursday 5 January 2023 and on Monday 9 January 2023, Julia
sent Karen a letter to say she is willing to take all the items except for the TV and sofa. She
said she can only afford to pay $30,000 for the remaining 36 items. Karen received the letter
on Tuesday 10 January 2023, and she immediately called Julia to tell her "$30,000 for the
remaining 36 items is fine". Unfortunately, Julia did not pick up the phone and Karen left a
voicemail for Julia. On the same day, Karen also sent a letter to Julia with the same message.
The next day (Wednesday 11 January 2023) Julia changed her mind. She posted a letter to
say she is no longer interested in buying the items and told Karen to forget the deal.
Julia heard the voicemail the next day (Thursday 12 January 2023) and she did not receive
Karen's letter until Saturday 14 January 2023 as Karen wrote the wrong address on the
envelope.
