The Training of Psychotherapists

A variety of treatments are available for those who experience difficulty in coping with their problems. There are two general categories of treatment: psychotherapy and biologically centered treatment. The over 200 types of psychotherapy use psychological techniques to treat emotional or behavioral problems and may deal with individuals or groups, children or adults. Therapists choose an approach (or approaches) consistent with their training and the problems and goal(s) of their clients. Biomedical therapy focuses on somatic (body) treatment and usually employs medications.
