Solving Quadratics by Factoring

Solving a quadratic equation by factoring depends on the zero product property. The zero product property states that if ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0.

Example 1

Solve 2 x 2 = – 9 x – 4 by using factoring.

  1. First, get all terms on one side of the equation.
  2. Factor the quadratic.
  3. (2 x + 1)( x + 4) = 0
  4. Apply the zero product property.
