First published in 1835, the short story "Young Goodman Brown" follows the Puritan Goodman Brown as he travels along a forest path at night. He encounters a man whose identity is eventually reveal to be the Devil, and soon discovers that many of the people he believed to be upstanding citizens of his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts, including his wife, Faith, are deveil-worshippers. When he wakes the next morning it’s unclear if the previous night was a dream, but nonetheless he never trusts anyone again and lives and dies in misery.
