Character List and Analysis President Coin

President of District 13, Alma Coin is about 50 years old with pale gray eyes and gray hair that falls in an unbroken sheet to her shoulders. From the start, Katniss doesn’t trust Coin and often sees parallels between how Coin runs District 13 and how Snow controls the Capitol. As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that Coin doesn’t trust Katniss, either, especially since Katniss doesn’t offer Coin her full allegiance or support.

As part of her requirement to be the Mockingjay, Katniss openly makes demands of Coin. Coin meets these demands but adds a twist of her own by saying that any deviance shown by Katniss will result in Katniss’ trial and appropriate sentence. Ultimately, Coin is driven by her hunger for power, and she doesn’t value Katniss’ life beyond its ability to bring Coin more power or favor in the public eye. She will use Katniss in whatever way she has to, alive or dead, as long as Katniss is able to rally the rebels and generate excitement around Coin, who eventually wants to step into power over all of Panem.
