Published in 1999, J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace tells the story of middle-aged Cape Town professor David Lurie’s fall from grace following his forced resignation from the university where he taught after he pursued an inappropriate affair with a Black student. He travels to rural Eastern Cape to stay with his daughter, Lucy, and they suffer a brutal attack soon after his arrival. David struggles to come to terms with his own behavior and sense of self as well as his relationship with his daughter after the attack.
