What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the tendency of a living body to regulate itself to keep everything about itself as constant as possible.

One characteristic of life is a phenomenon called homeostasis . . . For example, the normal human body temperature is 98.6 degrees F. If that temperature begins to fall, the body shivers to generate heat; if the body begins to overheat, perspiration cools it.
