I got marked down on a paper for using the word irregardless. Why?

The use of irregardless has become an epidemic, but it is not an acceptable word. The word is always regardless:

Regardless of what you think, the changes will be made.

With people who know language, irregardless is a glaring error because adding the prefix ir is redundant and unnecessary.
