In The Pearl, John Steinbeck tells of Kino, a pearl-diver who finds a massive pearl. News of the gem sweeps through the town, and many conspire to take it for themselves. Kino, his wife Juana, and his infant Coyotito flee, hoping to sell the pearl in the capital, but greedy trackers follow them. Kino kills the trackers during the night, but in the process, Coyotito dies. Realizing the trouble the pearl has caused, he casts it back into the sea.
