Carry Fisher is a good character foil for Lily. She is an attractive, twice-divorced mother who can still travel in wealthy social circles as a woman who helps the newly rich understand the intricacies of society. She has also weathered the scandal of accepting financial advice from Gus Trenor, and Judy Trenor’s subsequent wrath. When Lily faces scandal at Bertha’s hands, it is Carry who provides her with employment opportunities with the Gormers, Mrs. Norma Hatch, and the milliner’s shop. She also regularly supports Lily by inviting her to her house, where Lily will chance upon such marriageable prospects as Simon Rosedale.
