Oedipus Trilogy
Sophocles
In Sophocles' Oedipus Trilogy, Oedipus discovers that he unknowingly murdered his father and wed his mother — and gouges out his own eyes in horror — in Oedipus the King. Cast from the city, Oedipus turns from blind beggar to oracle, foreseeing the deaths of his two sons at each other's hands in Oedipus at Colonus. In Antigone, the Oedipus Trilogy ends tragically as Oepidus's daughter defies the new ruler of Thebes in order to bury her brother Polynices.
