Andromache

Hector's widow and the captive of Pyrrhus, one of the victors over Troy. She is faced by the agonizing choice of marrying Pyrrhus or sacrificing the life of her only son Astyanax.

Pyrrhus

Son of Achilles and king of Epirus. He is determined to marry Andromache at the risk of incurring the wrath of the Greeks. Orestes kills him at the instigation of Hermione, fiancée of Pyrrhus, whose love Pyrrhus has spurned.

Hermione

Daughter of Menelaus and Helen of Troy. She is betrothed to Pyrrhus and is in love with him.

Orestes

Son of Agamemnon. Hopelessly in love with Hermione, he is willing to kill Pyrrhus to please her. When his criminal compliance, far from winning her love, causes her to hate him, he goes mad.

Astyanax

Son of Hector and Andromache. He never appears onstage but plays a key part in the drama. The Greeks demand his death and Pyrrhus uses him as a weapon to win Andromache's love.

Pylades

Orestes' staunch friend who unhesitatingly assists him in all his endeavors.

Phoenix

Pyrrhus' confidant.

Cephise

Andromache' s confidante.

Cleone

Hermione's confidante.
