Winston is still in the Ministry of Truth, but the torture has lessened, and his physical condition is improving. He dreams of sitting in the Golden Country with his mother, Julia, and O’Brien, talking of peaceful things.
He discovers that the Party had been watching him very closely for seven years and that they even have soundtracks and photographs of him and Julia. He realizes the futility of his decision to set himself up against the Party.
During one of his dreams, he wakes up shouting Julia’s name and realizes that he will have to start the reintegration process all over. After a moment, O’Brien comes in and orders him to Room 101, the mysterious place where the third stage of Winston’s reintegration takes place.
Once in Room 101, Winston faces his greatest fear. O’Brien shows Winston a cage-like mask filled with hungry rats and clicks a door inside it open. One more click and the rats will feast on Winston’s face. O’Brien begins to settle the mask over Winston’s head when Winston shouts, “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! ….” O’Brien clicks the cage door shut.
